Wine Varieties

Savina Lane produces red wines of exceptional quality due to our granitic gravel soils and hands-on attention to producing quality fruit.

TEMPRANILLO Reserva

A classic red variety originating in Spain’s premier Rioja wine-growing region. Delicious with tapas, cured ham, herbed meat and smoked sausages. Our 2016 Tempranillo Reserva (two years in oak, two in a bottle before release), is currently available.

GRACIANO Lady of Spain

Considered a ‘noble’ red variety in its birthplace – the Rioja region of Spain – this magnificent but low-yielding variety was saved by the intervention of the Spanish government, which has subsidised new plantings.  Pair with all red meat dishes especially Spanish and Italian, grilled venison and lamb tajines. The 2016 Graciano Lady of Spain is now available.

MONTEPULCIANO

Indigenous to the Abruzzo region in Italy where this medium to full-bodied red wine has been produced for many centuries. We harvested our first few Montepulciano grapes in 2016 and the small amount of wine made from these was quickly sold out. The 2017 Montepulciano has not long been released.

MILLENIUM SHIRAZ

Originally from the Rhône Valley of France, where the variety is known as Syrah, this block of Shiraz was planted in 2000, hence the name. The 2016 Millenium Shiraz is now available.

OLD VINE SHIRAZ

Planted by our predecessors around 60 years ago, only a tiny quantity of this voluptuous, full-bodied red wine is produced from our gnarled old vines. After the Trophy and Gold Medal winning 2012 Old Vine Shiraz Reserve, we had not been able to harvest any fruit from these vines until 2016 due to rehabilitation work , poor weather conditions and bird damage. We managed to harvest enough fruit for one barrel of Old Vine in 2016. In 2017 and again in 2018 we picked around one tonne of superb fruit and hope to produce a wine equal or better than the 2012. We released the 2016 early in 2020 and there are only a few bottles remaining and these are reserved for Inner Circle members. There are still a few bottles  of the double-trophy winning, gold medal 2012 vintage wine available. Sadly we lost all our 2019 vintage of Old Vine Shiraz due to smoke taint from bush fires and all the 2020 vintage due to drought and damage from squadrons of ravenous birds.

Savina Lane currently offers two aromatic white wine varieties with recent plantings of a third.

FIANO

A fruity but dry aromatic white variety that originated in Campania in Italy. Believed by many to have once been enjoyed by the Romans as ‘apianum’ it is considered a classic variety due to its more than 2000-year history. A perfect match for most seafood dishes, cheeses and fruit platters, it also pairs well with Asian cuisines, especially sushi. We have released the 2021 Fiano Classico and have reasonable stocks.

MANSENG

A versatile aromatic white variety from the Basque country in the south of France and in the French Pyrenees. A legendary wine in its region, but virtually unknown outside it. The 2021 vintage has now been released. Sadly there was no 2020 produced due to smoke taint from bush fires.

VIOGNIER

We planted 1000 Viognier vines late 2021 and although it will be a few more years before this luscious wine is available, we are looking forward to it enormously.
