From the Rioja region of Spain, Graciano is believed to be the ancestor of many of the grape varieties now grown throughout the Mediterranean. DNA testing has revealed it is one of the earliest European varieties. Graciano is not an easy vine to grow and is low-yielding, hence its loss of popularity to commercial vineyards in Spain where it was mainly used to improve the colour and longevity of Tempranillo. Graciano thrives in our small vineyard at 850m on the cool border plateau of the Granite Belt and produces a most intriguing and interesting wine.
